Vaccinations

At Kleinburg Veterinary Hospital, we do not believe in over-vaccinating your pet, however, we do understand and support the need for vaccines to keep your pet safe.  Vaccines help to build immunity and protection against some of the most common infectious agents that affect your pet.

You’ll often hear your veterinarian discuss core and non-core vaccines.  Experts in the veterinarian industry generally agree on what vaccines are core vaccines for pets, i.e what vaccines should be given to every pet, and what vaccines are given only to certain pets (non-core).

Puppies and kittens are initially vaccinated with “core” vaccines at 8, 12 and 16 weeks of age.  Annual booster vaccines for adults include “core” vaccines and “non-core” vaccines.  Rabies vaccines should be administered by your veterinarian at 12 weeks or older and are mandated by local by-laws.

Non-core vaccinations for cats include protection against such diseases as:

  • Feline leukemia.
  • Feline AIDS.
  • Feline infectious peritonitis.
  • Chlamydophila felis.
  • Bordetella bronchiseptica.

Non-core vaccinations for cats include protection against such diseases as:

  • Leptospirosis
  • Canine Parainfluenza
  • Lyme Disease

It’s important to us at Kleinburg Animal Hospital that vaccines are administered based on your pet’s lifestyle.  Non-core vaccines should only be considered for certain pets, depending on where they live or travel and whether they are likely to be exposed to unfamiliar pets in close quarters.
